How to open a bank account in Hungary?

Opening a bank account in Hungary is a straightforward process and is highly recommended for international students staying for more than a few months. Having a local account makes it easier to manage everyday expenses, receive scholarship payments, and avoid international transaction fees.

To open a Hungarian bank account, you will typically need the following documents:

  • A valid passport or national ID

  • A Hungarian address (temporary or permanent residence)

  • A valid student status certificate (can be requested from the Registrar’s Office)

  • Your tax identification number (some banks may request this)

Most major banks offer student-friendly account packages with no or low monthly fees. English-speaking assistance is often available at larger branches, especially in Budapest.

We recommend visiting a bank in person to discuss your options. If you need help obtaining the necessary documents or choosing a bank, feel free to contact the Registrar’s Office or your student mentors.

Here are a few banks with English-speaking service and student-friendly options:

  1. OTP Bank
The largest Hungarian bank with wide ATM and branch coverage. Some branches offer English-speaking staff.

  2. K&H Bank
Known for their mobile banking and international student support.

  3. Erste Bank

  4. Raiffeisen Bank
