for PhD doctoral programme and individual doctoral preparation
The Rector of the John Wesley Theological College announces a call for applications for doctoral programme and individual preparation for the academic period beginning September 2024. Wesley John Theological College may award a doctoral degree (PhD) in the discipline of theology, following a doctoral programme and individual preparation procedure, as an academic degree, in accordance with international equivalence criteria. The doctoral degree shall attest to a high level of knowledge of the field of research concerned, the pursuit of new findings and the ability to carry out independent research.
The aim of the training
The aim of the training is to facilitate the acquisition of the level of knowledge and basic research practice required for a doctoral degree, and to ensure the supply of scientific researchers.
Forms of training
The level of knowledge required to obtain a doctoral degree is available in the following forms:
(a) organised self-financed training (2×4 semesters, 240 credits):
- full-time (full-time);
- part-time (correspondence);
- individual training
b) individual preparation.
Applications for individual training and individual preparation are invited from applicants with substantial teaching or research experience and a documented academic record.
Applicants for individual training must also apply for the complex examination when submitting their application form and must have a minimum of 20 points in peer-reviewed journals and a publication record in the field of their research topic only, with a minimum of 20 points by the date of admission.
They must also have at least 5 years of documented teaching or research experience in the field of theology. They must also attach a publication score sheet and copies of the publications as proof of their publications.
Applicants for individual training may be awarded up to 12 credits for academic work completed prior to admission and up to 70 credits for academic research work.

Within each of these research areas, research topics can be found.
Applications for doctoral programme are primarily invited for advertised topics, but it is also permissible to apply with a research topic that has not been advertised, provided that a thesis supervisor with expertise in the topic in question agrees to supervise the doctoral research work with the approval of the DHC.
Enrolment requirements
Applications for organised doctoral programme and individual preparation must be submitted in accordance with the requirements set out in Article 26a of the WDTRE Rules of Procedure on the application form in the Annex.
In all cases, the applicant must provide evidence of a Master’s degree or equivalent university qualification and professional qualifications. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree and professional qualifications, in parallel with a master’s degree, should provide evidence of their exceptional ability.
Your previous scientific research, any student research groups, and publication activities that demonstrate your commitment to the research topic.
You will also need an official certificate of good character from an authority certifying that you have no criminal record more than three months old.
The application is valid on submission of the required documents, a preliminary research plan and an acceptance letter from the research area and thesis supervisor.
Diplomas obtained abroad will be recognised in accordance with the WDTRE Rules of Procedure.
The personal data of applicants for doctoral programme will be processed in accordance with the Privacy Policy available on the JWTC website. The personal data of doctoral students admitted to doctoral school are processed on the basis of the consent form, which can be downloaded from the website.
Documents to be attached:
- Admission form,
- A copy of the diploma certifying the degree and professional qualifications obtained in the Master’s programme or equivalent university course, or, in the case of exceptionally talented applicants, the degree and professional qualifications obtained in the bachelor’s programme, in parallel with the Master’s programme.
- Evidence of previous scientific research, possible student research projects,
- A list of publications demonstrating your relevance to the research topic,
- Official certificate of good character with a clean criminal record (in the case of Hungarian citizens), not more than three months old,
- Preliminary research plan,
- Declaration of acceptance by the research area and thesis supervisor.
How to apply
The application for admission can be submitted in person (11 Dankó Street, Budapest 1086, Hungary – Registrar’s Office), by post (1086 Budapest, Pf. 200).
If sent by post, the envelope containing the application must be marked ‘APPLICATION FOR DOCTORAL PROGRAMME.
Deadline for submission of applications
The deadline for receipt of applications is 01 August 2024.
The admission interview
Applicants who meet the formal requirements set out in the call for applications will be called for an interview by the WDTRE Admissions Committee. An exception to this is the interview of an applicant for individual preparation. The purpose of the interview is to assess the applicant’s scientific background, previous scientific activity and knowledge of foreign languages, and to assess his/her suitability to develop a research topic of his/her choice.
Evaluation of the admission procedure
After the interview, the selection board will evaluate the candidate.
A maximum of 100 points will be awarded during the interview. Successful candidates must obtain a minimum of 60 points for full-time and part-time (correspondence) courses, 70 points for individual courses and 80 points for individual preparation.
The selection board will make a recommendation on the suitability of the candidates and forward it to the Doctoral and Habilitation Council.
The DHC decides whether or not to admit the applicant and informs the applicant accordingly.

Fees for the doctoral programme students for the academic year 2024/2025:
- Non Hungarian citizens English language tuition fee: 3000 Euro/ Semester
- Hungarian citizens English language tuition fee : 600.000 HUF/Semester.
- Non-Hungarian citizens English language admission fee: 100 Euro
- Hungarian citizens English language admission fee: 20.000 Ft
