Social work

Aim of study

To qualify professionals who are able to manage all possible resources to tackle social problems, improve and restore the qualify of life and functioning of individuals, families, groups and communities; as well as realize the complex conditions required to reach these goals. This activity is aimed at the improvement of the relationship between the individual and his/her environment in its broader sense.

A further aim is to provide appropriate material and information as well as develop skills and values which enable the mobilization of all available resources in facing the following issues:

–    Acknowledging and analyzing the functional interrelationships of society (economy, politics, culture);

–   The exploration of causes behind unfavourable social situations as well as the mobilization of resources that prevent the emergence of these causes or minimisetheir negative effects;

–   Identification of social problems occurring in different life-situations as well as the ability to view them in their social context;

–  improving the problem solving skills of individuals, families and communities to support them in identifying and tackling their social problems rooted in their economical, social, emotional, biological, interpersonal an family backgrounds;

–    Building relationships with disadvantaged individuals and communities as well as the social and public institutions aiming at the development of their social welfare to develop their skills in their ability to enforce their interests and rights;

Initiation of the development and modernization of the given network of social institutions and toolbars on a social, institutional, professional and political level;

Development of social services and the establishment of new services;

-Acknowledgement of professional skills in several areas of social work, the marking of competence limits in social work, co-operation with professionals working in other areas as well as involving other professions in handling problems outside the competences of social work.

System of knowledge checking

The system of knowledge checking includes partly independent, partly interdependent end-of- term signatures, grades for practice lessons, examinations, comprehensive examinations, degree thesis and final examination, prescribed in the curriculum

  • Comprehensive examination: it is obligatory to pass a comprehensive examination at least in two
  • subjects. The required number of acquired credits is 12, the number of lessons 120.
  • Thesis: The training requires preparation of a thesis connected to the study material.
  • The thesis is evaluated by the consulting teacher as well as the opponent. The required number
  • of one-to-one consultations is 15.
  • Final examination
  • the completion of the prescribed requirements,
  • the handing in of the assessments for practice lessons and case-work, the preparation, and acceptance of the thesis; minimum 120 hours of case-work and skill-development.

The main subjects of the comprehensive final examination are: Theory of social work and welfare- and social policy.
